JD Johnson Commits to Michigan

Phoenix (Ariz.) Pinnacle 2020 three-star quarterback JD Johnson picked up an offer from Michigan on Dec. 6, visited on Dec. 15 and is now committed to the Wolverines.

Most recently, Johnson went to Michigan for an unofficial visit. He was impressed with the facilities, coaches and overall atmosphere.

“It was unbelievable,” Johnson said. “What stood out was the quality of people they have on the coaching staff.”

The 6-foot-4, 190-pound pro-style signal caller has offers from Arizona, Colorado State, Michigan, South Carolina and UNLV.

Johnson spent most of his time in Ann Arbor with Michigan passing game coordinator Pep Hamilton, who is his primary recruiter.

“He said that I check off all the boxes, and he loves how I can function in tight spaces,” Johnson said.

Coming out of the trip, Johnson knew Michigan was home.

“The environment and everything about it is awesome,” Johnson claimed. “It checks off all the boxes for me.”

Since attending Pinnacle High School, Johnson has sat behind 2019 five-star quarterback Spencer Rattler, who is the No. 1 ranked pro-style quarterback in his class. Rattler is committed to play for Oklahoma.

Johnson said he has flown under the radar due Rattler’s stardom.

“I think being behind the number one quarterback in 2019 definitely reduced my exposure,” he added.

The quarterback is ranked No. 558 in the 2020 class, No. 25 at his position and No. 18 in Arizona, per the 247Sports Composite.

Johnson joins four-star cornerback Andre Seldon, four-star wide receiver Kalil Branham, three-star linebacker Cornell Wheeler and three-star tight end Nick Patterson as 2020 commits to Michigan – which is now up to five prospects.
