What Jim Harbaugh Sees in Five-Star Michigan Signee Daxton Hill

Though he originally committed to Michigan back in September, the coup and diamond of the 2019 recruiting class is five-star safety Daxton Hill, who had briefly flipped his commitment to Alabama just 10 days before Early Signing Day.

An enigmatic player that brings a much needed level of skill to a Michigan defense that’s losing some key players up front, Hill can be a great equalizer in the secondary. In the final regular season game of the 2018 season at Ohio State, Michigan struggled when it came to defending shallow crossing routes. Hill could possibly be a remedy for what seemed to be the kryptonite to the nation’s best overall defense.

As far as what Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh sees in Hill, he sees a playmaker that could quite possibly be the best player at the position ever in Ann Arbor.

On Wednesday evening, appearing on IMG Network’s Inside Michigan Football radio show, Harbaugh waxed poetic about how good Hill has been at the high school level, and what he expects to see from the hard-hitting defensive back once he straps on a winged helmet.

“He’s a fantastic player,” Harbaugh said. “Great family. His brother Justice is an outstanding running back at Oklahoma State, somebody that’s gonna be pro running back.

“Really gifted athletically and also a playmaker. You watch his games, and the plays that he makes, fumbles that he causes, interceptions that he makes, hits that he makes – he’s got, from the safety position, he’s a hitter. He’s not afraid of contact. He’s got great contact courage. Maybe the fastest guy on the field. In high school, he definitely did. I didn’t see a game where he wasn’t the fastest guy out there. I think he’s gonna be that type of player in college.

“Big time safety. Michigan has a history of big time safeties. He’s a low-key guy. He doesn’t like a ton of attention. You love his humility that way. But he’s got the ability to be one of the best safeties Michigan has ever had.”
