John Harbaugh says Brother Jim's 'A Little Nervous' for Michigan at Ohio State

It’s the biggest rivalry in sports, and no one knows that more than Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Not only did Harbaugh grow up in the rivalry, with his father Jack being on the coaching staff, but in his five years as Michigan’s quarterback, Harbaugh experienced three wins to two losses against the Buckeyes.

His brother John Harbaugh, head coach of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens, of course also is just as familiar with the rivalry with Ohio State, though he never played against Ohio State as a player with Miami (OH), and he’s only faced the Buckeyes once in his coaching tenure, as the special teams/defensive backs coach in 1997 with the Indiana Hoosiers.

While John Harbaugh’s brother has had success against OSU as a player, he’s now 0-3 as a coach. With a Big Ten championship game and College Football Playoff berth on the line, the elder Harbaugh says his younger brother is both super excited as well as a little on edge as The Game approaches, he told NFL Network and Audience Network podcast host Rich Eisen.

“He’s pretty pumped up, Rich,” “He’s pretty fired up. He’s a little nervous. Because the last – I mean, you know, you follow it – you’re like on the edge of your seat every week with these guys, right?

“I’ve been following it, too. It’s been way harder to watch Michigan football, or for my case Georgia basketball with Tom and Joanie Crean than it is to watch the Ravens. It is so hard! You’re stomping around your living room. But they’ve been playing great, and the fact that they got through this stretch and got Michigan State and got Penn State and got Indiana – got all these teams. Now they’ve got the game that they’ve been waiting for, and this is the one that matters. This is it, man – this is Michigan – Ohio State. 12 o’clock, you know?”

The Baltimore head coach says he saw Michigan running back Karan Higdon’s guarantee that the Wolverines would win on Saturday, and while the younger Harbaugh said on the Big Ten teleconference on Tuesday afternoon that he wasn’t a fan of the line of questioning which seemingly coerced Higdon to make that guarantee, John Harbaugh says that he’s pretty sure that Jim secretly loves that Higdon made the bold statement.

As John looks forward to the game, he says, “I’m half-tempted to guarantee victory for them!”

“I did see that,” Harbaugh said. “Let me tell you something: I got a feeling Jim loves that. What do you think?

“Let’s not be scared – not running scared. Let’s go compete.”
