Odds Shifting for Michigan at Ohio State

It’s been a long time since Michigan was favored over Ohio State. Coming into the 2018 season, the expectations by Las Vegas was that Michigan was a College Football Playoff contender, but that the arch rival Buckeyes we’re just a bit better.

Before the season, the expected line was -9 in favor of Ohio State. As the season went along, pundits decreed that there were two top teams in college football: Alabama, OSU — then everyone else.

But then, something funny happened. Michigan kept improving throughout the season, and asserted its dominance against three straight ranked teams — a stretch most thought, before the season, Michigan had little chance to emerge from unscathed. Ohio State, on the other hand, lost to Purdue in a blowout, and struggled to put lesser teams away, before and after that Week Eight matchup.

While the maize and blue struggled in some ways against Indiana in Week Twelve, it was a different story in College Park, Maryland, where OSU more escaped than earned victory.

The Buckeyes enter The Game with a powerful offense, but one that’s sputtered against elite defenses. The Wolverines have a balanced offense to go along with the nation’s top defense. OSU’s defense has been porous, at best.

Coming out of Week Ten, the Westgate SuperBook prognosticated that it would set the opening line at -3.5 in favor of Michigan.

And on Sunday, just 6 days before the rivalry has its annual renewal, it turns out Vegas still is in favor of Michigan, after weighing all of the above factors. As mentioned, at the outset, the official opening line was -3.5, but it’s tilting even more towards the Wolverines, according to Johnny Detroit from WagerTalk. However, as he explains, that hasn’t gone so well for Michigan historically.

On July 8th the Westgate Superbook in Vegas released their College Football Games of the Year and listed the Wolverines as 7.5 point underdogs to the Buckeyes (complete list of opening Games of the Year from Westgate). Fast forward to Saturday, November 17 and after the Buckeyes escaped in OT vs Maryland 52-21 and Michigan struggled to beat Indiana 31-20, the official opening Ohio State vs Michigan spread has the Bucks 3 point home underdogs (this line has already been bet up to -3.5 and -4.0 in some spots). This is the first time Michigan has been a favorite in Columbus since 2004 (-5.5) before that 1994 (-1). Result? The Wolverines lost BOTH game by double digits. (updated Michigan Wolverines vs Ohio State Buckeyes College Football Oddsfrom Vegas).

The Game is set for noon EST on Saturday on FOX.
