Michigan At Ease Atop Latest Big Ten Power Rankings

Last week’s 42-7 win over Rutgers wasn’t as big as many expected. Some are freaking out because the team allowed Rutgers to score, others are upset they were able to run the ball well, and while I can see their point, just relax. The team won easily like they should, and while four injuries popped up, none of them to be very serious and that is what this team needed to avoid against Rutgers.

Now comes their final challenge before Ohio State, Indiana, who shouldn’t be treated lightly. Indiana always puts up a good fight and won’t go down without swinging. The team should treat it more of a threat than Rutgers and expect the starters out there all game long.

Besides the Michigan victory, lots happened in the Big Ten this week, so check out how the rankings shook up below.

1. Michigan (9-1) (7-0)

Michigan took care of Rutgers and now moves on to Indiana, which could end up being a trap game for the Wolverines. The forecast hints at there being some snow/rain mix and that could have an impact on how the game is played as well. Michigan has to keep playing dominant with their foot on the gas.

2. Ohio State (9-1) (6-1)

Ohio State defeated Michigan State last week by 20, but the Spartans gave the Buckeyes a free 12 points, so reducing the final score with that, OSU only won by 8, which isn’t very impressive for a top 10 team. The Buckeyes are still in the Big Ten East race as they are one game behind the Wolverines and a win against Maryland this week would confirm that against Michigan, the winner goes to Indianapolis to play Northwestern for the Big Ten Championship.

3. Northwestern (6-4) (6-1)

A divisional winner has been crowned in the Big Ten West as the Northwestern Wildcats defeated Iowa last week and now can fight for a New Years Six bowl game if they win out and upset Ohio State or Michigan in the conference championship game. They take on Minnesota this week, who just came off a victory over Purdue so it could be a close game for the Wildcats.

4. Penn State (7-3) (4-3)

Penn State did its job in eliminating Wisconsin from the conference championship picture and ruining their season at being something special. Now, Penn State takes on Rutgers in what should be another victory for the Nittany Lions.

5. Wisconsin (6-4) (4-3)

Wisconsin now is playing for a good bowl game as their loss to Penn State eliminated their conference championship hopes. They take on Purdue this week who also lost their hopes at playing in Indianapolis last week in what could be a close game between the two schools.

6. Purdue (5-5) (4-3)

Purdue got their dreams crushed by Minnesota last week as they are sitting on the outside looking in now when it comes to the conference championship. They take on Wisconsin this week who suffered the same fate and Purdue is still fighting for a bowl game appearance.

7. Iowa (6-4) (3-4)

Iowa lost again this week but moves up just because of the disaster in East Lansing, and we will talk about that soon. Iowa had a longshot to reach the conference championship and one way to keep hope alive was defeating Northwestern, but alas they lost and now with three straight losses, are falling apart. They play Illinois this week in what should be a rebound game.

8. Michigan State (6-4) (4-3)

Michigan State couldn’t compete with Ohio State last week, giving them an easy 12 points wasn’t much help either. Their quarterback play with Brian Lewerke hurt and Rocky Lombardi playing inconsistent is hurting this team. They take on Nebraska this week and that team is getting better as the weeks progress so this could be another dogfight for the Spartans.

9. Indiana (5-5) (2-5)

Indiana got one of their two needed victories last week as they defeated Maryland. Indiana now has to take on the best team in the Big Ten Michigan this week and with the weather being bad and the Wolverines possibly focused on Ohio State, Indiana could spoil their season if they play lights out.

10. Maryland (5-5) (3-4)

Maryland hurt their chances at going to a bowl game last week by losing to Indiana and now they have to take on Ohio State. The good news is that the Buckeyes have been giving “easy” opponents chances to win these games and Maryland could end up scaring the Buckeyes in the end.

11. Minnesota (5-5) (2-5)

Minnesota pulled off a big victory last week as they handled Purdue well and are now one step closer to a bowl game appearance. They play Northwestern this week, who could if they wanted to, rest some players as they clinched the divisional title, but odds are head coach Pat Fitzgerald won’t and will play his team like this game matters in the end for them.

12. Nebraska (3-7) (2-5)

Nebraska had their way with Illinois last week and had a good win for the program but now they must focus on Michigan State, who comes in limping at quarterback and that could be the main difference in the end if Nebraska can score on offense against a tough run defense from Michigan State.

13. Illinois (4-6) (2-5)

Illinois had their slim chance at going to a bowl game and with the loss to Nebraska, odds are they won’t win their final two against Iowa and Northwestern. First is Iowa and coming off an eliminating loss, they are going to be angry as they look to end their losing streak.

14. Rutgers (1-9) (0-7)

Rutgers scared Michigan for a quarter, then Michigan realized who they were playing against and got the lead back and didn’t hold back anymore. Rutgers plays Penn State this week in what should be another loss for the Scarlet Knights.
