Michigan Football Week 11 Rooting Guide

Michigan moved up into fourth in the latest College Football Playoff rankings and now they are in the picture. If they simply win out, they should stay in the top four, but crazier things have happened, so Michigan can’t have anything crazy happen to ruin their playoff chances. Check out these three games that can help Michigan in the long run.

Game 1: No. 24 Auburn vs. No. 5 Georiga

One of the major talks, when the rankings were released on Tuesday, was how close Georgia and Michigan are overall. Both have quality losses and wins, but Michigan got the nod over the Bulldogs.

Some talk is if Georgia upsets Alabama in the SEC title game, Georgia gets in but does a one-loss Alabama team get in over a Big Ten Champion Michigan or are they on the outside looking in? The fact that it is even getting talked about isn’t a good sign for the Wolverines.

One way to get rid of the problem is for Georiga to lose another game, and while they most likely will lose to Alabama, it’s better to get rid of them now and don’t consider them a threat, then to have it come down to the wire in the end, and a two-loss Georiga team beating Alabama means Alabama probably stays in the playoffs, while Georgia is still out.

Game 2: No. 16 Mississippi State vs. No. 1 Alabama

Here is another obstacle for the Wolverines. Alabama has three games left, Mississippi State, Citadel, and Auburn, before playing Georgia in the SEC title game.

Mississippi State and Auburn are the only two threats to Alabama and Michigan, while loving Alabama on the outside of the playoff picture, can’t afford the Tide to lose and cause headaches for the committee. Alabama winning out is the best thing for Michigan as it helps answer the question of if Alabama is in, and pushes away Georgia from thinking about entering, leaving Oklahoma and Washington State as the only threats left to the Wolverines.

Game 3: No. 10 Ohio State vs. No. 18 Michigan State

This is where we’re going to have some people divided on the topic. So currently in the Big Ten East standings, Michigan is in first at 6-0, Ohio State is in second at 5-1, Michigan State is 4-2. Maryland and Penn State are 3-3 but lost to Michigan so Michigan has the tiebreaker.

If Michigan were to somehow lose out, and Michigan State wins out, they would jump and win the division. If Michigan just wins this week, Michigan State is eliminated from the race and Ohio State is left. That is most likely happening.

If both Michigan and Ohio State win their next two games, the winner of “The Game” would win the division and go to the title game. Now, if Ohio State loses one more game, and Michigan wins their next two, even if Ohio State beats Michigan, Michigan still would have the better record and go in the end.

People say “I want Ohio State at their best” or something along the lines of wanting that game to determine who goes to Indianapolis. The thing is, I would rather be safe than sorry and while Michigan is playing lights out, you can never know what happens in college football, so Ohio State losing would be huge for Michigan and make the path to at least the conference championship game, much easier and less stressful.

I get everyone wants to beat Ohio State and winning a Big Ten title wouldn’t be as great if Michigan lost to them. I am not saying Michigan can’t beat Ohio State and still get to the title game, but getting there is the goal and if one less team is in their way, that is good for Michigan.
