The Hilarious Story of How Chris Partridge Identified Bushell-Beatty at Paramus Catholic

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan safeties coach Chris Partridge has an interesting perspective on Wolverines RT Juwann Bushell-Beatty.

As the former head coach of Paramus (NJ) Catholic before coming to Michigan in 2015, Partridge coached Bushell-Beatty for four years before the two made their way to Ann Arbor, one year apart from one another.

But, it wasn’t as simple as Bushell-Beatty showing up to football tryouts and making the team. The formidable athlete, who has come into his own in this, his fifth-year at Michigan, was once an aspiring basketball player. But, perhaps, that wasn’t a career move destined to work out.

On Wednesday, Partridge shares how he identified Bushell-Beatty as a potential football player, and what he did this past offseason to encourage his former player to excel in his final opportunity with the Wolverines this year.

And though he started really green, it’s his determination to be great that’s made it so that he’s continued to excel even through the most difficult struggles and challenges that he faced.

“I saw a guy that through struggles wouldn’t quit,” Partridge said. “He kept pushing. And then I saw determination. He had a strong desire and started loving the game.

“When someone loves the game, when they have no idea what they’re doing, and they might be out of shape and have things going on, he just showed the love for the game. In this game, if you keep working and you keep pushing and you put in the time, and you remain humble and all that stuff, it has a way of fixing itself and allowing you to be a great player. He obviously has the size, he had that component already.

“It’s been awesome. I guess I’ve known him for 10 years now, almost. 9 or 10 years. Really, really good. Really, really proud of him.”
