Week Seven Picks, Predictions and Preview: Michigan vs. Wisconsin

Michigan absolutely decimated a stellar Maryland rushing offense and top 20 defense en route to a 42-21 victory on Saturday, that wasn’t even that close. But the challenge gets tougher this weekend, with No. 15 Wisconsin coming to town.

College Football News’ Pete Fiutak and WolverinesWire’s Evan Petzold, Brandon Knapp and Isaiah Hole share their Vegas-style predictions for the game on Saturday as well as their final overview and score predictions for SMU at Michigan.

Predictions

PETE FIUTAK

Overview: It’ll be a close, tight game throughout, but the Badger secondary won’t come through when it needs to.

Player of the game for Michigan: Shea Patterson
Two bold predictions:
1. The Badger running game will work. The Wisconsin offensive line will have its best game of the year.\
2. Michigan will have two pass plays of over 50 yards.
Final score prediction: Michigan 27 – Wisconsin 23

Evan Petzold

Overview: I expect Michigan’s high powered offense to take over against Wisconsin. For the first time since playing Notre Dame, Michigan is on the highest stage in college football – 7:30 p.m. at The Big House for College GameDay. This is Shea Patterson’s time to step up and prove himself for the Wolverines.

Look for Patterson to rip up Wisconsin’s defense, which has only allowed 16.4 points per game this season for the 13th-best average in Division I FBS. Despite the Badgers strength Western Kentucky, New Mexico, Iowa and Nebraska, Patterson and the Wolverines are a different type of challenge. Quarterback Alex Hornibrook will also have to be prepared for Michigan’s stout defense, led by Rashan Gary and Chase Winovich on the defensive line.

Player of the game for Michigan: Shea Patterson
Two bold predictions:
1. Wisconsin misses one field goal.
2. Aidan Hutchinson records his first sack for Michigan.
Final score prediction: Michigan 24 – Northwestern 17

Brandon Knapp

Overview:On offense, Michigan shouldn’t have too much trouble driving down the field, but finishing drives is where they will struggle. Quarterback Shea Patterson will have his best game of the year as he looks like a difference maker on this offense.

When it comes to the defense, stopping Jonathan Taylor won’t be easy, but the Wolverines will hold him to under 100 yards and no touchdown. We’ve seen Alex Hornibrook under pressure when he has to takeover a game and that’s never good for the Badgers, so the Wolverines will capitalize on his mistakes.

Player of the game for Michigan: Shea Patterson
Two bold predictions:
1. Jonathan Taylor is kept out of the end zone
2. Chris Evans rushes for more yards than Karan Higdon
Final score prediction: Michigan 27 – Wisconsin 17

Isaiah Hole

Overview: In 2016, Michigan had the nation’s top ranked defense and outplayed Wisconsin thoroughly, but the offense stalled a lot, and the field goal kicking kept missing opportunities. Last season, Wisconsin had the number one defense, and was getting outplayed by a Michigan team that had a lead in the third quarter – but Alex Hornibrook and Jonathan Taylor took over.

This game should look a lot more like the 2016 game, except, Wisconsin is not as talented on defense, especially in the secondary.

Injuries, including to defensive end Isaiahh Loudermilk, who spells his name super wrong, are going to cost the Badgers dearly in this game. Michigan’s offense is jelling at the right time, and Wisconsin has showed in many ways that it’s not the Wisconsin of old.

Michigan may have not been able to fully contain Jonathan Taylor a year ago, but, like how the previous generation was able to contain Saquon Barkley – twice – I like Michigan’s odds this year. They’ll put the onus on Alex Hornibrook to beat them, and with his inconsistency, I expect him to make some plays in the middle of the field, but he doesn’t have a Troy Fumagalli this year to check down to.

The game has the usual early flows before ebbs for Michigan before it starts moving the ball at will – though it will stall out more often than usual. The punting game plays a crucial role in field position, and the Michigan defense stands strong on first down, putting Wisconsin into obvious third-down passing situations. Ultimately, the Wolverines pull away, and the Badgers add a late score to make the game look closer than it ended up being.

Player of the game for Michigan: Donovan Peoples-Jones
Two bold predictions:
1. Peoples-Jones breaks a punt return for a touchdown
2. Michigan holds Jonathan Taylor to under 100 yards – (Ohio State held him to 41 in the Big Ten Championship game)
Final score prediction: Michigan 24 – Wisconsin 15
