How Competitive Gymnastics Helped 2020 OT Grant Toutant with Football

From the time Grant Touaont was three years old until he was 11, he could be found in the gym – perfecting his gymnastics skills.

Now, Toutant is a 6-foot-6, 280-pound junior on the offensive line for Warren (Mich.) De La Salle.

Being as big of a player as Toutant is, gymnastics helped with his flexibility. Having that attribute has allowed the offensive tackle to pick up offers from Toledo and Indiana State.

It has also delivered interest from Michigan, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Duke, Iowa and Iowa State.

“I always play to the whistle, and I’m very physical,” Toutant said. “One of the things that really helps me is my flexibility. Most of my flexibility comes from (gymnastics).”

Toutant visited Michigan on Sept. 8, Northwestern on Sept. 29, Michigan State on Oct. 6, and he will be back in Ann Arbor on Oct. 13 to see Michigan play Wisconsin.

The most impressive aspect of any of Toutant’s visits was the Michigan fanbase on the road against Northwestern on Sept. 29 – a game the junior attended for a visit.

“I was shocked because fans were chanting ‘Go Blue’ at the away game,” he explained. “Northwestern tried to quiet them down with music, but that didn’t work at all.”

Toutant has been in close contact with Michigan offensive line coach Ed Warinner, graduate assistant Patrick Kugler and Director of Recruiting Matt Dudek.

“They just told me to keep working and that they like what they see already,” Toutant said.

What is Toutant looking for in a school? Well, it’s all academics.

“I’m starting to pick up some steam,” he said of his recruitment. “I really like Michigan’s academic support. Michigan and Northwestern have blown me away. I’m very interested in going there.”

If Michigan offered, Toutant said he would have to think about committing, but knows the Wolverines would be near the top of his list.

Toutant is ranked No. 469 in his class, No. 51 at offensive tackle and No. 19 in Michigan, according to 247Sports Composite.
