Michigan Cracks Top 5 in SBNation's Advanced Metrics Rankings

While we wait to discover where the Wolverines rank in the latest AP Top 25, we already know that Michigan moved up from No. 16 to No. 13 in the Amway Coaches Poll, after a Week Six domination of Maryland, 42-21.

But, advanced metrics are higher on the Wolverines than the polls indicate.

SB Nation’s Bill Connelly is the keeper of the S&P+ ratings, which uses several different factors to determine how teams are faring. You can find a breakdown of how it works here.

So, while Michigan is ranked 13th overall by the coaches, by Connelly’s matrix, the Wolverines are actually the 5th-best team in the country through six weeks, with an S&P+ rating of 22.6, moving up from No. 7 a week ago.

Ahead of Michigan are Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and — of course — Ohio State. Michigan has already played No. 8 Notre Dame and will face No. 7 Penn State, No. 31 MSU, No. 55 Indiana, No. 119 Rutgers, with No. 13 Wisconsin coming up next.

The Wolverines have already defeated No. 77 Western Michigan, No. 105 SMU, No. 71 Nebraska and No. 58 Northwestern.

The bad news? The team ranked at No. 5 seems to have a difficult time staying there, per Connelly.

Despite a win this past Saturday, Washington moved down from No. 5 to 10.

Michigan opened the season ranked 10th per Connelly’s initial projections.
