Week Six Picks, Predictions and Preview: Michigan vs. Maryland

It took awhile, but the Wolverines took down the Northwestern Wildcats 20-17 on the road to improve to 4-1 on the season. But, there’s a daunting task at hand, with 3-1 Maryland coming to town — an upset-minded team that’s already defeated Texas to start the season.

College Football News’ Pete Fiutak and WolverinesWire’s Evan Petzold, Brandon Knapp and Isaiah Hole share their Vegas-style predictions for the game on Saturday as well as their final overview and score predictions for SMU at Michigan.

Predictions

PETE FIUTAK

Overview:Maryland doesn’t have the passing game, and no one runs well in Michigan. The Wolverines bounce back from a sloppy effort against Northwestern to play well in a big win.

Offensive player of the game: Karan Higdon
Defensive player of the game: Rashan Gary
One bold prediction: Michigan gets up three scores in the first half.

Evan Petzold

Overview: Maryland’s defense is one of the top in the country, but Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson will build off his heroics of last weekend’s game against Northwestern, throwing for well over 200 yards. Michigan’s defense, aiming to silence critics, shouldn’t have a problem dealing with Maryland’s offense. I expect Rashan Gary and Chase Winovich to be all over Maryland quarterback Kasim Hill.

Running backs Ty Johnson, Anthony McFarland and Tayon Fleet-Davis have been the focal point of the Maryland offense, so they should be able to provide a little bit of stress on Michigan’s front seven early in the contest. All in all, Michigan will slow down Maryland by the mid-point of the second quarter and cruise to a victory.

Offensive player of the game: Shea Patterson
Defensive player of the game: Devin Bush
One bold prediction: Ben Mason scores two touchdowns
Final score prediction: Michigan 28 – Northwestern 10

Brandon Knapp

Overview:This game is going to be sloppy and close. Michigan’s offense will have a tough test as they play the 20th ranked defense in Maryland and with the weather predicting a stormy day, it’s going to be even tougher running the ball and passing it might not even be an option.
The Michigan defense will hold the Maryland offense in check as their strong suit is that defensive line and with the game most likely being a duel between the running backs that each team have, the Wolverine defense has better talented players and will hold Maryland off big time.

Offensive player of the game: Karan Higdon
Defensive player of the game: Devin Bush Jr.
One bold prediction: The amount of yards combined for both teams will be under 350.
Final score prediction: Michigan 17 – Maryland 6

Isaiah Hole

Overview: Maryland comes to Ann Arbor with a 3-1 record and a signature win over Texas, in what could have been a down year given the turmoil happening in College Park. The Terps are led by a solid defense and one of the nation’s top rushing offenses, led by Ty Johnson and Anthony McFarland.

But, despite beating the Longhorns and dismantling a Minnesota team with a walk-on true freshman at quarterback, the Terrapins did lose to Temple at home. They’re still not fully along just yet.

However, interim coach Matt Canada has done an amazing job of keeping this team rolling, especially now that Maryland is healthy at quarterback.

With this game being at home for Michigan, though, I think Michigan exorcises the demons from its road game at Northwestern. The Wolverines continue to play things close to the vest, however, with the three game gauntlet of Wisconsin, MSU and Penn State looming after this week. Look for Michigan to start faster than it did against Northwestern on both sides of the ball, get out to an early lead and coast from there.

Offensive player of the game: Zach Gentry
Defensive player of the game: Chase Winovich
One bold prediction: Michigan holds Maryland to under 250 total offensive yards.
Final score prediction: Michigan 35 – Northwestern 10
