Michigan Football Week 6 Rooting Guide

While No. 15 Michigan hosts Maryland on Saturday, Oct. 6 at noon, there are other games across the country that you should keep your eye on and during the Michigan game.

This week there aren’t any Big Ten games to focus on, but there are three non-Big Ten games you should pay attention too as they could help the Wolverines move up in the AP poll and could help their case come playoff time compared to other teams. Last week, every team I told you to root for lost, so let’s try this again.

Game 1: No. 19 Texas vs. No. 7 Oklahoma

Since losing to Maryland week one, Texas has rebounded and are now a top 20 team. Oklahoma has been struggling this season, despite their number seven ranking heading into week six.

Oklahoma has the harder schedule for the rest of the season as they have to play No. 9 West Virginia, No. 25 Oklahoma State and two tough unranked opponents in TCU and Texas Tech. Texas only has West Virginia and Oklahoma State, so their path is easier, so if Oklahoma survives Texas, there is still room for error and close wins against Army and Iowa State aren’t a good look for the Sooners.

Game 1: No. 5 LSU vs. No. 22 Florida

With their only loss to being a now ranked 13 Kentucky, Florida has been on a three-game winning streak, even getting a big win over Mississippi State last week. No. 2 Georgia is their last challenge after LSU.

LSU, on the other hand, is undefeated and has a tougher schedule to close out the year. After Florida they take on Georgia the following week, then two weeks after Georgia, they play No. 1 Alabama. Florida has to upset Georgia and win the SEC to get into the playoff and odds are that isn’t happening. So the least Florida could do is stumble LSU down as they are good enough to defeat the Bulldogs and Tide.

Game 1: No. 6 Notre Dame vs. No. 24 Virginia Tech

Notre Dame got a big win over No. 14 Stanford last week and now they have their last toughest game on their schedule as they travel to Virginia Tech. Notre Dame is looking good, and a loss can knock them down below the top 10 and with no conference championship game, they will need a lot of help to move into the college football picture.

Virginia Tech still has No. 17 Miami (FL) and a date with possibly Clemson in the conference championship game, and they will also need help to get into the playoff picture. The Hokies making the playoffs, even after a win over Notre Dame, are less likely than the Wolverines. It’d make the Wolverines look not as strong as they lost to a team who now lost to a worse team, but it could help the Wolverines in the long run.

Root for: No. 24 Virginia Tech
