David Long Talks About His Tweet Towards Critics

When facing a 17-0 deficit, the Michigan football fanbase wasn’t happy with how the team was playing. The offense couldn’t get anything going and the defense was allowing Northwestern to do whatever they wanted to do to them. Fans of the Wolverines were not friendly and were criticizing the team and certain players.

One player that was attacked was cornerback David Long. Long was flagged for a pass interference penalty during the game and he was criticized on social media. So after the game, Long tweeted to those talking about him.

“You just gotta put your head down and stand in the foxhole, like coach Brown says,” Long said. “Nobody knows what we go through here, so you just gotta keep it at that and keep working. I just think they should leave it at that and let us work, let us do what we do.”

Michigan mixes up its play calls on defense, whether it is zone, man or blitzes, it is always tough to predict, but man coverage seems to be the hardest one to learn and execute for cornerbacks.

“You just by yourself (playing man coverage),” Long said. “You gotta have the ultimate level of confidence and you gotta have tough skin and next play mentality, so we always preach regardless of the outcome, next play gotta get back up and play.”

Compared to zone defense as a cornerback, things seem easier than in man coverage as you have a certain part of the field you have to cover compared to focusing on one guy the entire way.

“You a little bit more, I don’t wanna say laid back, but you just got a little bit more help. Like I said you gotta have supreme confidence, gotta believe in yourself.”

Long and the Wolverines will look to continue their winning ways as they take on Maryland this Saturday, Oct. 6 at noon in Ann Arbor.
