Michigan Football Week 5 Rooting Guide

No. 14 Michigan takes on Northwestern this week in Big Ten conference play and while you will be watching the game at 4:30 p.m. EST this Saturday, there are other games that you should be paying attention too.

This week there are three games to keep an eye on as they could help the Wolverines either in the Big Ten standings or the AP polls. Every week you should be cheering for an upset so Michigan can move up the polls, but having 13 games where I preach about cheering for the unranked team to win is just pointless as they usually don’t always win, so picking a few interesting games between ranked opponents higher than the Wolverines ranking is the safest bet.

Game 1: No. 20 BYU vs. No. 11 Washington

After beating Wisconsin, BYU has been improving and now faces a tough Washington team. Washington had a tough game against Arizona State last week and this could be another tough test for the Huskies. Washington still has to play Oregon and Cal away, and host No. 7 Stanford later in the season.

Washington could slip up with the tough schedule they have left, while BYU only has Boise State as their toughest opponent left. While you would think I’d tell you to root for Washington, that isn’t the case. While BYU only has one tough game left, getting Washington out of the playoff picture now is better than later. Cal could turn around and not be a close game. Oregon might have some fight in them, but Stanford is the true major game left and if Washington wins that, along with the others, along with the conference title game, they are in.

Game 2: No. 25 Texas Tech vs. No. 12 West Virginia

This game is like the BYU/Washington in where West Virginia has a tougher schedule later in the season, but getting them out of the picture now is better than later. Say West Virginia wins out, then loses to now No. 6 Oklahoma in the final game of the season, and Oklahoma is still in the playoff race, that is a big win for the Sooners and could help their playoff case.

Texas Tech still has TCU, Oklahoma, and Texas and they are bound to lose once again and getting this win can also help move the Wolverines up the AP rankings as West Virginia falls. West Virginia losing to Texas Tech, then later to Oklahoma will only make Oklahoma’s win over West Virginia with less of an impact.

Game 1: No. 9 Penn State vs. No. 4 Ohio State

It should be a no-brainer who I will tell you to root for, even if it won’t help the Wolverines in the AP poll, it will help them in the Big Ten rankings. Ohio State losing would only knock them down possibly to 10 at the very worst, so Michigan won’t jump up in the polls with the win and they play Penn State later in the year, so beating a Penn State team that beat Ohio State will be a good look.

Ohio State doesn’t have any tough games after this as Michigan State is the only ranked opponent left on their schedule, but the way the Spartans have been playing, they won’t give the Buckeyes much trouble. So unless the Buckeyes have a bad game and fall to a Big Ten team besides Penn State, Michigan vs. Ohio State this year could be for a Big Ten championship appearance.
