What Northwestern is Saying About This Week's Matchup

Michigan travels to Illinois to take on the Northwestern Wildcats this week in another Big Ten matchup as both teams come into it 1-0 in conference play and will look for another win to help their season out.

Michigan is 3-1 with wins over Nebraska, SMU, and Western Michigan with that lone loss to Notre Dame week one and they sit at number 14 in the AP polls this week.

Northwestern is 1-2 with a win over Purdue, but back to back losses to Duke and Akron and a bye week to prepare themselves for this game. They announced this week that running back Jeremy Larkin would retire due to medical reasons and that has been the main focus on Northwestern this week as they try and find a replacement for Larkin.

“I’m not going to lie: We’re going to play a bunch of guys and see who emerges,” running backs coach Lou Ayeni told the Chicago Tribune. “The best thing we can do is find which skill sets these guys excel at and accentuate that.”

Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald shifted his focus from talking about Larkin to talking about the Wolverines as he talked positively about their offense to the media on Monday during his press conference.

“Offensively they are incredibly well coached,” Fitzgerald said. “They run a lot of different personnel groupings, a lot of motion, shifts, put a lot of pressure on you from a standpoint of defensive adjustments. Great talent at every position.”

Fitzgerald then switched and started talking about the defense of the Wolverines.

“Coach Brown’s defense is outstanding, fun to watch, I enjoy watching it, except for this week,” Fitzgerald said. “Kick game-wise, they put a lot of pressure on you with their athletes and with their scheme. They’re very aggressive and they do a very good job, very well coached.”

Michigan will play Northwestern this Saturday, Sept. 29 at 4:30 p.m. EST as the Wolverines will look to stay hot and stay undefeated in Big Ten play.
