Why Joel Klatt Thinks Michigan is a CFB Playoff Contender, Better than ND

Fox Sports’ Joel Klatt has been both effusive in his praise for Michigan as well as critical.

In the lead-up to the season, he told WolverinesWire in an exclusive interview that the narrative about Jim Harbaugh being ineffective against his rivals had to die, given the circumstances in three to four of those five losses. But, after the Notre Dame game, he was hyper-critical of the Wolverines and their showing.

Three wins later, he’s back to effusive — so much so that he says that Michigan actually is probably better than the sole team it lost to.

Appearing on FS1’s Speak For Yourself with Jason Whitlock, Klatt explains why he thinks the Wolverines are better than the Fighting Irish, and why that loss is looking more and more like an anomaly.

“I think they’re better at quarterback than Notre Dame is, and they’re better on the defensive side, and that will prove itself out over the course of time,” Klatt said. “Remember, they didn’t have Shea Patterson eligible, if you will, for a long period of time before that game [vs. Notre Dame], and I think they got caught, didn’t play their best, defensively gave up a couple of big touchdowns in the first quarter. I still think Michigan is the better team of the two. I know that sounds crazy, but they are.”

But he didn’t stop there.

The goal for Michigan this year goes beyond just competing. After going 8-5 in a rebuilding year in 2017, the expectations for this team were to compete for the College Football Playoff. Many pundits — including here on this site — said that was certainly a possibility. However, after the showing Week One, those expectations were tempered in a major way.

Klatt isn’t fully back on the bandwagon just yet, but he says that this maize and blue outfit is one that has its destiny in its own hands.

“I think there are just a handful of teams that can honestly say they control their own destiny toward the Playoff – I think Michigan is still one of those teams,” Klatt said. “They’ve got enough of those resume-builders on their schedule left, like Wisconsin, Penn State, Michigan State, Ohio State. If they were to take care of business – and the way that they’re playing, they might – they would find themselves in the Playoff.”

Klatt continued, saying that with everything that’s gone on thus far in the Big Ten, Michigan could be a formidable foe, especially with all of the attention being paid to a few of the other teams:

“I would watch out if I was in the Big Ten, because if there is a team that’s slightly under the radar right now that I would bet on to potentially win that conference, it would be Michigan – in particular without Bosa on the field for Ohio State. Watch out for the Wolverines.”
