Why Shea Patterson Told Fans to Relax Last Week

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — It was an odd moment at the end of the week last week, when Michigan quarterback went on the radio and told Wolverines fans they needed to “relax a little bit.”

As chronicled by The Detroit News’ Angelique Chengelis:

Patterson was asked about the criticism during an appearance Wednesday morning on 97.1 The Ticket’s “Jamie and Stoney” show. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh typically appears weekly on the show.

“Everybody just needs to relax a little bit,” Patterson said. “It was our first game and we lost by a touchdown at Notre Dame against a very good team, especially the first game of the season. We’re just going to continue to keep getting better and fight every week.”

And the reaction to the maize and blue losing the season opener to what is now the No. 8 ranked team was bordering on hysterics, that’s not the motivation Patterson had in tempering Michigan fans’ emotions.

And while it may be a new experience, playing in Ann Arbor compared to Oxford, Miss., Patterson doesn’t at all mind the pressure cooker mentality that exists with the Wolverines and the fanbase. Still, he explained more about why he told the fanbase it needed to settle down a little bit, after emotions flared high.

“I understand the tradition and expectations that surround this program,” Patterson said. “That’s what it is – the University of Michigan. I’m proud to just be here and be a part of the team.

“When I say that, it’s just – understand that nobody’s expectations are bigger than our own here in this football office. So we’re just going to continue to get better every single week.”

Since losing the season opener at Notre Dame 24-17, Michigan has won its last two, beating Western Michigan 49-3 and SMU 45-20.

This Saturday, the Wolverines start Big Ten play, welcoming in West Division foe Nebraska to town for the first time since 2013, with a set noon kickoff at The Big House.
