Why Nico Collins is 'One of the Best Athletes' Shea Patterson 'Has Ever Been Around'

After the Tarik Black injury news came out, the Michigan football fanbase was jamming the panic button on how the offense would be after losing their top wide receiver, again, for an undisclosed period of time — especially considering the struggles they had last year without him. Then word spread of Nico Collins’ emergence, and he quickly stepped up and, suddenly, that which was worrisome soon disappeared.

Collins impressed many in camp before the season started and he saw the field more overall. So far this season, he has five catches for 113 yards and a touchdown. His quarterback Shea Patterson seems to think highly of him, too.

“He’s also one of the best athletes I’ve ever been around,” Patterson said. “Just the way he’s running his routes he’s very crisp. He can really go, he can really fly and I think just with him knowing that he’s kinda that guy, just giving him confidence and just seeing him build confidence in himself is really pleasing to see.”

Like everyone has been saying, fall camp is what really turned Collins into a top wide receiver on this team. Patterson added to that by saying more when asked when he first noticed Collins’ increased confidence.

“I think ever since the fall, fall camp started,” Patterson said. “I’ve always, everybody’s always seen potential in him, in the spring, even last year in film.

“I remember watching him, he’s a tall lanky guy, very athletic and fast. So there’s no reason why he can’t be you know, one of the top receivers in the country.”

Patterson and Collins seemed to have created a good trust between each other as they have connected on two deep passes, one for a touchdown.

Along with the rest of the Wolverines, the duo will need to get ready though as they start Big Ten play this week as they host Nebraska on Saturday at noon.
