Notebook: Jay Harbaugh Assesses Some of the Younger Tailbacks

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — It’s difficult to call it an enviable position or an unenviable one, in that Michigan has multiple tailbacks who seem to be good to go with its current scenario, where the Wolverines had to play without starter Karan Higdon this past Saturday.

Of course, Chris Evans is considered something of a co-starter, but even he went out with injury late in Saturday’s game against SMU.

Thankfully, both have been cleared to play against Nebraska this upcoming weekend, running backs coach Jay Harbaugh says. But, even if they weren’t able to go, Harbaugh thinks the running game would be in good hands.

“I thought the other guys did a great job filling in,” Harbaugh said. “You certainly are always going to miss having him, because he’s pretty darn good at everything. The way that he hits holes and the aggressiveness that he runs with is a little bit different. I don’t think any of our guys play with that same speed and violence. But, Chris and Tru and O’Maury all bring something special to the table that maybe Karan doesn’t have.

“Either way, you’re going to get a nice balance. But you always miss having a guy like him.”

As Jim Harbaugh said on Monday, with Higdon and Evans out, the rotation would then be Tru Wilson, O’Maury Samuels then Christian Turner. Here’s what Jay Harbaugh had to say about all three on Wednesday:

Tru Wilson

“You feel happy for his success and the sacrifices he makes and all the hard work he puts in. When ever you see a guy have his hard work pay off, it’s gratifying, because that’s what you preach — that’s what you tell everybody. All the different examples of it on the team, it’s great to see. You know it’s an inspiration for the guy that’s a year or two younger than him that’s going through that same journey, that same process.”

O’Maury Samuels

“Love what I saw in the game! He was playing fast! He’s a guy that has come a long way and is learning to play at that full speed. His game speed is actually matching his timed speed in a 40 (yard dash). Which is really nice. That’s a sign of him being comfortable. Him being able to be himself and not hesitate, not worry at all. Seeing that really makes you feel good as a coach, and really looking to see it continue and see his role expand.”

Christian Turner

Christian Turner was in contention for the third running back, but has been limited with injuries.

“Definitely see him getting some time at some point. He plays really, really fast. He’s a guy who isn’t the fastest guy ever. He’s fast, but he plays at that tip-top speed. Which isn’t the most common thing. You’re really getting a guy who’s fast, with great feet, a really good feel. He’s tough. He’s not super big yet, but he plays bigger than his size. Really, really aggressive, hard-nosed kid and approaches everything with a great attitude.”
