WolverinesWire + Devin Gardner: Breaking Down Daxton Hill's Game (w/Video)

Huge news for the Michigan 2019 class, as on Tuesday night, just days after his official visit to Ann Arbor, Tulsa (OK) Booker T. Washington five-star safety Daxton Hill pledged his commitment to the Wolverines.

And there’s one former player who really liked what he sees from the 8th-ranked player in the entire recruiting class.

Last week, former Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner had a rare recruiting take, taking to Twitter to share his thoughts on Hill, after reviewing his film.

Recording his weekly show The Breakdown with Devin Gardner on Tuesday afternoon, Gardner told WolverinesWire’s Isaiah Hole, Gardner explained what makes Hill so special as a player, and why he (will be) a huge asset to the Wolverines.

“I saw it coming through my Twitter feed — I’m not giving credit to anybody,” Gardner said. “I’m not the guy that’s gonna kiss all the recruit’s butts and things like this. Then I go watch the film, and from the very first play, just — explosions! Speed! And a real want to jumped out at me.

“He’s a real athlete. Fast. Attacks the ball. And when he can’t get the ball, he’s going to attack the man with reckless abandon. But still, without getting the penalty, type deal. (He’s) a special athlete to be able to do that, especially since so much is asked of the defense now, with all the rule changes and things like that that are pretty ridiculous.

“But he’s a phenomenal athlete and a phenomenal player. And I’m pretty sure he’s a phenomenal kid. I think he’d be good in the maize and blue.”

Why is it that Hill’s contact courage could be such a huge asset to Michigan?

Gardner explains that Hill’s penchant for making the big hit already at the high school level, if he brings it to college, will add to Don Brown’s already ferocious defense.

And, above all, Hill’s a smart player, and isn’t going to make the big hit if there’s an opportunity to get the football, or if there’s a possible penalty involved, Gardner says.

“It’s very important,” Gardner said. “It’s high-speed collisions at this next level. In high school and little league and stuff, people collide a little, but these are car accidents every time it happens. And it looks like he has no fear of that, but he’s smart about it. He doesn’t go for a big hit when there’s an interception available. We want the ball. The ball is the most important thing. And once he touches it, he becomes an offensive player.

“And I could see him being like an Ambry Thomas-type guy, where he’s used in so many different ways because he’s so talented.”

Hill is Michigan’s 23rd commitment of the 2019 recruiting class and now is the highest-rated commit in the fold, joining fellow five-star Chris Hinton.
