Bush: 'This Definitely Could Be The Best Defense' Since Playing For Michigan

Since 2014, Michigan has been known for having a tough defense. In the final year of Brady Hoke’s coaching career at Michigan, he finished with a 7th-ranked defense. The years before that, he kept them inside the top 50, but the consistency in being a good defense wasn’t like it is now.

Since Jim Harbaugh has taken over as head coach and Don Brown as defensive coordinator, Michigan has been a top-four defense in Harbaugh’s first three seasons, finishing 4th in 2015, tied for 1st in 2016, and 3rd last season.

This year they are currently ranked 12th, but there are still nine games — possibly more — left to be played.

While this defense isn’t to be slept on or overlooked — as they can be better than their current 12th-ranking — linebacker Devin Bush Jr. thinks this defense can be the best he’s ever seen here.

“This definitely can be the best defense (we’ve had) — easily, hands down,” Bush said. “The people we got on this defense just makes our defense that much better. To take that next step, I think we just got to make our focus go higher, we gotta have a mentality when we’re out there, gotta get off on third down, we gotta create scores, we gotta get turnovers.”

If Bush believes this defense can be the best he’s ever been on, they have some work to do overall. This defense can be good, but topping that 2016 defense will be tough work for this team. But with the right mindset and coaching, they could very well do it, and being 12th-ranked right now is a good start for the team.

Michigan will look to showcase that 12th-ranked defense heavily this Saturday as they start Big Ten play against Nebraska at noon in Ann Arbor.
