Winovich Says 'We Just Got To Be Better And Be More Prepared' On Quarterbacks

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Only up 14-7 against SMU with 1:22 left in the second quarter, SMU needed a first down and they connected on a 32-yard pass that would put them at Michigan’s 44. After a few plays, Michigan safety Josh Metellus would get a defensive pass interference and give SMU a first down.

The next play he made up for it with a pick-six to close out the half with a 21-7 point lead. The quarterback at that time was Ben Hicks, who would not start the second half and was replaced with backup quarterback William Brown.

Brown had seen action earlier in the game when SMU was trying out read option plays with him to mix up the tempo, but when it came to the second half, Brown would finish almost to the end, before getting hurt on a hit from Kwity Paye. Hicks would finish out the game for SMU.

When Brown came in for SMU in the second half, the Michigan defensive players thought it was a wildcat formation again, as defensive end Chase Winovich said “No, that’s their freshman, the backup quarterback and they were convinced that it was just a wildcat, they were never going to throw the ball with him.”

Winovich added more about the defense, saying “We just got to be better and be more prepared. It doesn’t matter who they put in, we gotta be able to shut them down and not let him make any plays, especially somebody that we know as a runner scramble.”

Michigan has faced a dual-threat quarterback earlier this year in Notre Dame quarterback Brandon Wimbush. While the team did hold Brown to 48 yards, he was still able to keep plays alive and gain yardage with his legs. Michigan will face more dual-threat quarterbacks as the season continues, so improving on how to stop them now is better than trying to figure out what went wrong come near the end of the season.
