Rashan Gary Talks Notre Dame Loss, Onto Western Michigan

Coming into the 2018 season, Michigan’s defense was talked up about how they were the number three defense last year and that this year could be better. It didn’t start out great as Michigan would let Notre Dame score on their first two drives, giving them a 14-0 lead early on.

The major talking point about the defense this year was the defensive line. Junior defensive end Rashan Gary and senior end Chase Winovich are the main focal points on the line as the season started. Winovich had six tackles, three and a half for loss and one sack last week, while Gary had four tackles and a half tackle for loss.

Losing to Notre Dame week one wasn’t what the team expected coming out of the gates to start the 2018 campaign. “The only thing I have to really say is we hurt ourselves,” said Gary when asked about how Michigan lost to Notre Dame. “Only two-three plays, maybe four plays can really hurt you in a game, and that’s what it really came down to. And that’s just us hurting ourselves.

“It’s week two. It’s a must win. So we’re going to be in the film room extra hard this week. We’re going to practice extra hard, harder than we did last time because what we did last time obviously didn’t give us the outcome we wanted to, we just gotta keep pushing and striving.”

While it has only been one game, with 11 more to come, the Michigan defense starts the season ranked 42nd in the NCAA, but don’t expect that to stay for long. Michigan hosts Western Michigan this week in what should be a bounce-back win for the Wolverines in their home opener.

When asked about Western Michigan, Gary said, “We watched a little bit of film yesterday, we’re going to get into it more. I really don’t know what to expect. It’s a team that is able to put up points. I watched the Syracuse (vs. Western Michigan) game and I think they had 30+ points so it’s a team that can put up points. We just gotta do what we have to do as a defense and as a team.”

Michigan will look to get their first win against Western Michigan this Saturday, Sept. 8 at noon in Ann Arbor.
