What the Ref Told Chase Winovich on Questionable Roughing the Passer Call

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — It was a pivotal moment in Saturday night’s matchup between Michigan and Notre Dame. ND started out hot, torching the Wolverines defense, while Michigan couldn’t finish drives. The maize and blue were down 14-3.

There was about 4 minutes left in the first half, and the Wolverines were struggling to keep the Irish from marching down the field, once again. Notre Dame was in the process of engineering a 15 play drive, and on the penultimate play, it looked like the maize and blue had the blue and gold stopped, eight yards from the goal line. Notre Dame QB Brandon Wimbush’s 3rd down pass didn’t make it to the intended target, Miles Boykin, in the end zone.

The Wolverines faithful in the south end zone erupted, only to have their cheers engulfed by that of the army of green rooting for the home team.

Amid a field of green sat a yellow aberration. A flag.

It ended up being a questionable roughing the passer call, half the distance to the goal. Irish tailback Jafar Armstrong would run it in on the next play.

The transgressor of said roughing penalty was senior defensive end Chase Winovich, who hit Wimbush shortly after release. It seemed as if there was no way for Winovich to hold up, but after the game, when asked about the call, he said that the referee’s reason for assessing the penalty was implausible.

“So, I asked the ref about it, and I didn’t necessarily agree with this call, because I was rushing to the left side – he’s a right-handed quarterback,” Winovich said. “He told me I hit him in the back, and that’s why he called it. I’m not sure how that makes any sense. Hey, I don’t agree with it, but that’s his call, not mine. You learn from it and move on.”

And move one Winovich & Co. will do after the 24-17 season opening loss. Michigan returns home to host Western Michigan, Saturday at 12PM at The Big House.
