Harbaugh: 'Makes a Lot of Sense' on Yearly Notre Dame Rivalry Game

Michigan and Notre Dame will continue their rivalry this Saturday, Sept. 1 at 7:30 ET in South Bend. Head coach Jim Harbaugh said at Monday’s press conference, “I feel good about it. Feel good about renewing the rivalry. Feel good about being in game week. Feel good about starting the season.”

The last time Michigan played Notre Dame was in South Bend in 2014, where Michigan got shutout 37-0. This year the Wolverines look to return to South Bend with a vengeance and get revenge for what happened four years ago.

Michigan and Notre Dame have had an interesting past when it comes to this rivalry. What started in 1887, Michigan and Notre Dame have met 42 times, with Michigan leading the series 24-17-1. One thing about this rivalry is how many breaks that have been between each games.

There have been five hiatuses for this rivalry, four happening before 1978. The two schools would play from 1978-1982 before taking a three year break where they would start the rivalry back up in 1985 until 1994, before taking a small break and playing three years in a row from 1997 until 1999. Then in 2002, Michigan and Notre Dame would play their longest amount of games, 13 of them, until 2014.

In 2012, Notre Dame would announce it would exercise its option to end the rivalry after the 2014 season. Then Michigan head coach Brady Hoke wasn’t happy with the decision, saying Notre Dame was “chickening out.”

When asked about if Michigan should play Notre Dame every year, Harbaugh said, “It makes a lot of sense. We get on a bus and go to South Bend on a two and a half hour drive. They can do the same when they come here. It makes a lot of sense.”

Michigan does have a home and home series scheduled with Notre Dame as they play this Saturday, Sept 1 at Notre Dame, while next years game will be at Michigan on Oct. 26. No games after 2019 have been agreed upon.
