Tied to Rashan Gary's Hip, Michigan Freshman DE Aidan Hutchinson Is Pushing for Greatness

Aidan Hutchinson, just days into fall camp, is working out with the second team defense and playing the strong-side defensive end position behind Rashan Gary.

Gary considers Hutchinson his little brother.

“He’s a great kid coming in as a hard worker and is tied to my hip, so that’s my little brother right now,” Gary said of Hutchinson. “I got him under my wing. He’s a big guy, gives all he’s got and isn’t afraid to ask a question. Some of the young guys are scared to ask, but that’s not in his character.

“He wants to be great. He feels the pressure to be great now and is pushing to be great now.”

Hutchinson, at 6-foot-6, 260 pounds, committed to Michigan from Dearborn (Mich.) Divine Child on Feb. 21, 2017. He remained committed and signed less than a year later – Dec. 20 – before enrolling on June 3.

The four-star defensive end prospect, ranked No. 112 in the 2018 class, picked the Wolverines over Boston College, Louisville, LSU, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Toledo, Vanderbilt, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

In the 2017 campaign, Gary logged 66 tackles, 12 tackles for a loss and six sacks. If Hutchinson can produce as a backup to one of the nation’s best defensive end, it’ll say a lot about his capabilities.

Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown agrees.

“This Aidan Hutchinson is going to be a good player. Can we get him ready? I don’t know,” Brown said. “My lean is with Coach (Greg) Mattison’s tutelage, he’ll be ready to go. So that’s a good thing.”
