Two Michigan TEs Make Mackey Award Watchlist

Two Michigan Wolverines have made the preseason watchlist for the award given to the nation’s best tight end.

The John Mackey Award is given to the nation’s best tight end.

And it’s an award that Michigan fans should already be familiar with, as the Wolverines most prolific tight end, Jake Butt, won the award after the 2016 season.

But it’s a new era for Michigan football, and there hasn’t been one TE with Butt’s production.

However there could be two.

A year ago, third-year TE Zach Gentry was second on the team in receiving yards, while second-year TE Sean McKeon led the team in receptions. Forming a formidable duo, both are expected to take another big step forward in 2018, given that 2017 was the first on-the-field experience for both.

And those who dole out the Mackey Award have taken notice of the duo.

Preseason award watchlist season is in full swing, and both Gentry and McKeon have been added as players to watch this year at the tight end position.

The year that Jake Butt won the award, he had 46 receptions for 546 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Last season, Gentry had 17 receptions for 303 yards and 2 touchdowns, while McKeon had 31 catches for 301 yards and 3 touchdowns.
