Weeks after the CFL Saskatchewan Roughriders signed former Michigan QB Devin Gardner, it acquired the rights to Denard Robinson.

Does this signify that Patterson is a one-year rental for Michigan?

It’s certainly possible, with the former five-star getting 20/1 odds towards winning the Heisman Trophy in 2018, and many pundits expecting the new Wolverines transfer to head to the pros after this season.

Shea Patterson, of course, transferred from Ole Miss this past offseason, after playing in 10 games and throwing for more than 3,000 yards. Due to the former Rebels head coach Hugh Freeze misleading Patterson about the nature and severity to the sanctions placed upon the program, he, along with all the other former players who transferred from Oxford, were deemed eligible immediately.

But it came as a surprise last month, when Patterson, a former two-sport star, who hasn’t played baseball since high school, was selected by the Texas Rangers in the late rounds of the MLB Draft.

And perhaps more of a surprise: he reportedly signed his contract with the franchise, according to Evan Grant from the Dallas Morning News (as reported by the Detroit News’ Angelique Chengelis.)

Patterson could, of course, choose to suit up for the Texas Rangers in whatever farm system they put him in next year. But, as he joins the Wolverines this season, he has two years of eligibility remaining at the NCAA level.

Of course, he could also forgo his final season of eligibility if he does have a Heisman-worthy year, and head off to the NFL Draft, as well. Or, he could stay, and the Rangers could just retain his rights.

The one thing we do know for sure: It’s very good to be Shea Patterson right now.
