Michigan Basketball Plans End-of-Summer Trip to Spain

Michigan football isn’t the only Wolverines program that travels abroad, as the Michigan basketball team announced an August trip to Spain.

Move over Michigan football — you’re not the only team in the program who gets to have a little fun in another country.

Although, business will, somewhat, be involved.

Per a press release on Tuesday morning, the Michigan basketball team announced that it will travel to Spain, where the team will spend time in both Barcelona and Madrid.

The trip will commence in the period between the summer and fall semesters, with the team traveling on the day the summer semester ends, August 17. They will return on August 26.

While the team will see the sights, there will be three exhibition games that will take place while the Wolverines are abroad.

Head coach John Beilein commented in the release:

“Having the opportunity to take a trip like this is going to make for a lasting memory for our players,” said Beilein. “We are allowed to make these trips once every four years, so this will be our third trip in my time at Michigan. Each trip has proven to be a wonderful educational experience for our student-athletes. This will be a great opportunity to learn about the Spanish culture, as well as bond and grow together as a team. It will also assist us in our preparation for a very challenging 2018-19 schedule. We are very excited for Team 103; this is a fantastic way to start the upcoming season.”

This is not a new practice for the basketball team. As Beilein noted, they have traveled abroad twice since he took over the head coaching position in 2007 — to Belgium in 2010 and Italy in 2014. Per NCAA rules, basketball teams are able to travel abroad but once every four years.
