2019 Columbus (OH) St. Francis De Sales three-star VIPER Joey Velazquez commits to Michigan football and baseball.

Multi-sport Athlete From Columbus Commits to Michigan

It’s not often that two sports can celebrate a commitment on the same day.

But that’s precisely what’s happening with the Wolverines football and baseball programs on Friday.

2019 Columbus (OH) St. Francis De Sales three-star VIPER Joey Velazquez pledged to the Wolverines for both football and baseball on Friday morning, making him Michigan’s fourth player in the football class from the state of Ohio, and second commitment from Columbus (OH) this week — with 2020 WR Kalil Branham having pledged on Tuesday.

On the football side, Velazquez had offers from Cincinnati and Indiana, and 651st overall per 247Sports.

On the baseball side, Velazquez was actually committed to Ohio State for over two years, but flipped to Michigan with the chance to play football. He’s a two-time first-team All-Ohio and the 2018 Division II player of the year.

He got his first offer for football from the Wolverines, which assuredly helped his decision along. He told Land of 10 that even getting the opportunity — even if it was from a rival school to where he was committed — was something of a dream.

“[Michigan] has just offered me today for the first time for football and baseball. I was just in the coaches office and looking at my Hudl when they called. … They told me they were looking at my film and thinking about offering me and asked if I was still interested in playing football. I said of course and just explained that I wanted to keep my options open.

“Then, Coach [Jim] Harbaugh came on the other end and told me that I could play both football and baseball. I couldn’t be any happier,” Velazquez gushed. “I love playing football and it’s a dream come true to play Division I football. When I got that news I was just like — I was walking on cloud nine. It was unreal.”

Velazquez isn’t the only multi-sport athlete the football team has. Linebacker Jordan Anthony has toyed with the idea of playing on the baseball team, while WR Oliver Martin is a decorated swimmer.
