Five Wolverines Make Preseason All-America Team

Good news/bad news.

Good news first: Five Michigan players were named to Athlon Sports’ preseason All-America team.

Bad news: Not a one of them were on the first-team.

On Tuesday, the publication released its picks of the projected best college football players for 2018, and five Wolverines — all defensive players — made the first four teams.

Headlining the maize and blue were three second-team preseason All-Americans, as defensive ends Chase Winovich and Rashan Gary got the nod, along with middle linebacker Devin Bush Jr.

Third-year VIPER Khaleke Hudson was added to the honor as a third-team All-American, and cornerback Lavert Hill made the publication’s fourth-team.

The Wolverines came third in the Big Ten with Athlon’s selections, with West foe Wisconsin getting seven players honored, while arch-rival Ohio State getting one more nod, with six preseason All-Americans.

In Athlon’s preseason All-Conference selection, however, Michigan earned 14 honorees, including six on the defensive first-team.

That included first-teamers: DE Rashan Gary, DE Chase Winovich, LB Devin Bush Jr., VIPER Khaleke Hudson, CB Lavert Hill and CB David Long.

The second-team includes: RB Karan Higdon, TE Sean McKeon and LG Ben Bredeson on offense with K Quinn Nordin and PR Donovan Peoples-Jones on special teams.

The third-team: QB Shea Patterson

Fourth-team: WR Tarik Black and OC Cesar Ruiz
